This week’s post marks one year of Fundraising for Breakfast.
That’s right! Fundraising for Breakfast is a toddler! Put away any mental image you’re conjuring up of a chubby one-year old squeezing cake between sausage fingers and smashing it in their face. That’s not how we eat birthday cake around here. Hey, Amy Sedaris! Make unblinking eye contact with the camera and show us how to eat birthday cake like it’s supposed to be eaten:
This past week I re-read all 52 posts from the last year, grabbing them with my bare hands, and shoving them in my face with abandon. It was a delicious burden. The result is this anniversary post explaining what I’ve been feeding you and what we’ve been eating together for the past year.
I think it best to categorize Fundraising for Breakfast into categories that are each about people (I’ve included selected posts that speak to each category).
People I know—They teach us how to raise money with style and substance:
My mother, Kitty, and her quest to raise money from celebrities like Nicholas Cage, Joey Chestnut, and Keith Morrison.
People I live with—They are fun and funny would-be fundraisers and very good sports about it
People who inspire me—They make us think about raising money in new ways
Friends who contribute to my new “Why I Give” series: Izzy and Angda
Guest posts with great perspectives from smart fundraisers like Gonzo, Joe, and Child #2 (here and here)
Historical fundraisers like Florence Nightingale, Mark Twain, and Helen Keller who didn’t always know what they were doing, but raised the money that made a remarkable impact on the world.
Books (and their authors) that give us new ways to think about fundraising (and moving exercise equipment): Benjamin Franklin’s Last Bet, The Psychology of Money, and Supercommunicators
Some of these posts are a bit messy. Though the virtues of messy fundraising is more and more what this Substack is about.
But it’s all still fun.
Like eating birthday cake you’re your hands instead of a knife and fork.
A year later, a few lines stand out to me from Fundraising for Breakfast’s first post on May 6, 2024:
If you’re shopping around for something to get me for Fundraising For Breakfast’s birthday, go back and click one of the above links and take a second look (or first look if you’re new around here) at anything that sparks your interest.
Thanks for hanging with me for a year, for subscribing, commenting, and keeping fun conversations going over the past year.
Every Monday morning at 7am, this is how you make me feel, Substack!
Congrats Dan! Someone give this man a book deal so we can all read more of his work!
