One of the first chapter book biographies I read was on FN. Thoroughly enjoyed this piece Dan. Thank you!

I started looking into Florence Nightingale around December and my wife told me one of her favorite books growing up was titled The Lady with the Lamp. I tried to find a copy for her and give it to her for Christmas, but there's only A MILLION biographies of Florence Nightingale for children titled The Lady with the Lamp. Bummer. Was a good gift idea I couldn't do anything with.

I am glad you wrote this piece on FN. She should have been awarded a posthumous award of some sort. If you refer to numerous articles on her especially in the Scientific American or Science magazine, you will find she actually revolutionized how hospitals and how notes should be taken for medical records etc. In fact during Covid, many had said if only hospitals had adopted her way of how it should be built, we would find less germs in the air in the hospital. Note: they have a lot of germs in the hospital, which is always wise to wear a mask of some sort when entering the premise.

There was a line in the biography I read that said something along the lines of "Nightingale's real contribution was to hospital administration and not nursing" which I thought was a fascinating point. How much square footage available per patient, how airy/ventilated the facility, and not building hospitals next to garbage dumps. She was a fascinating figure--I recommend the biography I read (Bostridge, Florence Nightingale: The Making of an Icon). It was a bit lengthy, but comprehensive.

I love that she was like nope, you aren’t just going to feel what I’m asking for but I’m gonna make you actually think. Here’s the data. Legend.

You're totally right, Elena. Actually, you've got me re-reading part of the end of the post where I say she wants to "Go out, collect the data, analyse the information, and use it to solve problems." Your comment shows me I skipped a piece--helping explain the information and shape the way people think about problems. From what I understand, she wasn't just like "here's the data, dummies." She presented it and helped people understand it and think for themselves about it. A step that's easily forgotten about.

You’ve reminded me of the sketch from I Think You Should Leave when the guy is expecting his gazpacho soup to be cold but because it’s room temp it “burns him.”

I've been burned, Kaitlyn. Real bad. But not by gazpacho soup. By my family's unconcern about me. I can say no more...the pen falls from my hand...
