I had a typing teacher in high school who smacked your fingers with a ruler if you didn't have good form. He also smacked your legs with the same ruler if you had bad posture. Pretty sure a teacher couldn't get away with that these days. It worked in my case. I was able to type fast with few errors. I guess fear does that.
"I guess fear does that" is the best concluding line of any comment I've read thus far on this Substack. I will be stealing it and pretending I came up with it.
My typing class from lo those many years ago used to say to me and my friends, “you are never going to pass this class if all you do is type notes to each other.” Ha ha on him, I got a 100 on the Regents exam. Yes, typing was a Regents class in the late 60’s in New York State. At my best I could type 160 wpm, but the backspace key was my downfall. Dan, be honest, do your colleagues think you’re nuts?
Kitty types at 160 wpm and I've just self-administered a typing test on my own and I'm pleased to report I type at an astounding 161 wpm rate. I do feel like the readers of Fundraising for Breakfast deserve a Cady vs. Dan typing race. I'll work on this and report back
Did Candy have a bratty (not the B-word that I’m using in my head 😜) typing teacher in middle school who yelled at her for not staying in the home row like we did? It could be a trauma response on our part. 🤷🏻♀️
**Pretty sure it was middle school and it might’ve been called “computer class” or something to seem more “up-to-date” in the early 90s.
I remember taking a "computer class" in 8th grade that was really a typing class. I can see the guy's face who taught it but can't remember his name. He was pretty strict about it and turned typing into a competition. He'd time us and we all had to say out loud how many words per minute we typed with how many errors. Which is actually a pretty good idea to make a typing class fun. It was over 30 years ago and I still remember it
I remember that too. I was in a pretty rowdy class (shocker) so that could be where the “bratty” aspect comes from. 😂
I have noticed over the years that not everyone uses the “home bar” method. Maybe once computers became more common in households the need for computer/typing classes weren’t considered necessary, so maybe a lot of people didn’t learn the “home bar” method?
I was so mad at my mom for making me take the yearlong typing class in high school v. the half-year. She said typing was a skill I would have forever and appreciate it. Mom was right. I am an excellent typist, and it definitely helped me get a job early in my career ---for an entry level fundraising job in DC in 1997 I had to take a typing test....and I crushed it! No joke or as the kids say these days no cap! I could take Kitty back in the day....my typing is not as fast these days, but still in good form.
And, thank you for the reminder about fundraising and different styles/approaches....good to remember at the start of a new year!

OK, everybody. Kitty's thrown down the gauntlet. Who can beat 160 wpm? They may think I'm nuts, mother, but they're nice about it.
Do we have documented Cady and Dan WPM somewhere? Sure, both ways are fine...but who is faster?

Or people just type how they type 🤷🏻♀️✌🏻
I admit, I am a hunt and pecker typist, but i know where the keys are suppose to be.
I've seen you type, Dave. It makes my head spin. In my mind this post was dedicated to you.

Has anyone else noticed how difficult it is to search on streaming services, where they do not adhere to the home keys intheir alphabet setup?
